Luca - trivia

  • Massimo’s mustache is identical to Machiavelli’s muzzle. This may be a nod to Enrico Casarosa’s short film „La Luna,” in which Bambino compares Papa and Nonno’s favorite tool to their facial hair
  • Alberto’s last name, Scorfano, means „crimson” in Italian.
  • The first boat is dubbed „Gelsomina,” which translates to Jasmine from Disney’s Aladdin (1992). Gelsomina is also the name of the character played by Giulietta Masina in Federico Fellini’s La strada (1954), which was a major influence on Luca.
  • Several minor characters, such as local priest Don Eugenio and the elderly sisters Concetta and Pinuccia Aragosta, are not mentioned in the film and simply appear in the credits. Despite the fact that the sisters’ name is Italian for „lobster,” which fits the Animal Theme Naming other sea monsters.
  • „Piacere Girolamo Trombetta” is a popular Italian joke among young children. It literally translates as „Nice to meet you, [my name is] Girolamo Little Trombetta.” The joke involves grasping another child’s hand in a handshake and moving it back and forth as if it were a slide on a trombone’s hand. Trombetta also means „fart” in Italian, which makes the joke much more fun for young children.
